OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The Omaha Public Power District is changing the way it charges for electricity by increasing the fixed amount customers pay each month and reducing what they pay for what they used.
Several community groups had urged the utility to reconsider the plan because of the effect it would have on low-income consumers. The Omaha World-Herald reports the plan was approved Thursday.
Starting in June, utility customers' monthly fixed fees will increase gradually to $30 in 2019. Electricity usage rates will also drop 22 percent over the same period.
The utility says the changes aren't designed to increase revenue, but the shift will make customer bills more closely reflect the cost of delivering power.
Low-income customers will receive monthly credits between $2.50 and $7.50 to help with the change.
