(KAIR)--An Atchison teacher has been charged with a felony for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student.
That follows Wednesday's arrest of 35-year-old High School teacher Shelly Aversman. “Today we charged her with one count of unlawful sexual conduct,” Atchison County Attorney Jerry Kuckelman tells MSC News. “[It's] a charge which involves a teacher having a sexual type relationship with a student.” Kuckelman says the charge stems from events that occurred in the spring of 2012 that just recently came to light.
None of the alleged crimes with the male student occurred on school district property.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation investigated the case, and Kuckelman says the agency made the arrest shortly before noon Wednesday.
Following her arrest, Aversman was booked into the Atchison County Jail on a bond of $50,000, which she posted, and was released.
Her first appearance in Atchison County District Court is scheduled for Friday morning.
No immediate word from Atchison's USD 409 following the arrest of Aversman.
USD 409 Superintendent Dr. Susan Myers on Thursday released the following statement regarding the matter:
