(KAIR)--The sounds of ringing bells are heard, and the familiar seasonal sight of red kettles is viewed, as the Salvation Army's annual fundraiser is launched for the Christmas season. Kim Bottorff, County Coordinator of the Atchison Red Shield Service Center, says all money raised through the annual campaign stays in the local community. “The Red Kettle Campaign is our annual campaign to raise our funds for the entire year,” she tells MSC News. “It stays one-hundred-percent here in Atchison County and supports the clients of Atchison County completely throughout the year.”
Bottoroff says the funds raised support a wide variety of local needs and services. “To serve any of our clients who come in who need assistance with utilities, or maybe gas to and from a doctors appointment, rent, or things that would be considered emergency. It goes for food assistance and also works with our holiday program where we provide a meal to families in need and toys for the kids with the Angel Tree program.”
Kettles are currently set up at several Atchison locations, with volunteers to ring the bells still needed. “We need lots of volunteers, it's very hard to get the kettles manned. We look at two hour shifts, we'd love to have them give us a call, it's 367-1207. We have three different locations that go all day long. We ring bells from 8 in the morning until 8 PM at Cash Saver and both doors at Wal-Mart and then also at ALPS.”
The Red Kettle Campaign runs through December 23rd.
