(KNZA)--Random drug testing is not the immediate answer to alcohol and drug problems in Royal Valley USD 337.
That was decided by the Board of Education during their most recent meeting, with the Board voting 5-2 against such a policy.
The Holton Recorder reports the vote followed a 45-minute discussion focused on the issue.
If proceeding with a random drug testing policy had been approved, administrators would have begun drafting the initiative to allow such tests to be conducted on students.
The two members voting in support of the policy were Jeff Stithem and Ann Kelly.
Despite disagreeing on implementation of the plan, the newspaper reports all board members are in agreement that an alcohol and drug use problem does exist in the district.
The current policies related to drug and alcohol use will be reviewed during the next meeting of the School Board, scheduled for December 14th.
