(KNZA)--A man blamed for the murder that his brother was convicted of is dead.
The not-for-profit Midwest Innocence Project makes the claim that Tom Bledsoe is responsible for the 1999 killing of a 14-year-old Oskaloosa girl that his brother, Floyd, is serving life in prison for.
WIBW-TV reports that Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Herrig confirms the death of Tom Bledsoe, who died of an apparent suicide. His body was discovered Monday in his car in Bonner Springs. Foul play is not suspected by investigators.
Last month, the Midwest Innocence Project announced that attorneys for Floyd Bledsoe filed a motion in Jefferson County District Court to vacate his first-degree murder conviction and release him from custody, claiming his innocence.
His brother was initially charged with murder in connection with the 1999 death of Camille Arfmann. However, a week later, prosecutors dropped the charges, with Floyd Bledsoe arrested and charged in the case.
Arfmann was his sister-in-law.
The TV station has reported that an attorney for Bledsoe says DNA testing now establishes Bledsoe's innocence in the death of the girl.
