St. Joseph Standoff Suspect Charged
10/14/2015

(MSC News)--Authorities say a 44-year-old St. Joseph man has been arrested after shooting a woman, holding her hostage in a motel room and engaging in a standoff with police.

KQ2-TV is reporting that the hostage is identified as 41-year-old Rebecca Urban who was shot in the arm and transferred to Mosaic Life Care once the 11 hour standoff came to an end. She was later transferred to the University of Kansas Hospital with what police say appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.

The Saint Joseph News-Press identifies the suspect as Roderick Ellis, who has been charged with kidnapping, first-degree domestic assault and armed criminal action.

The standoff began around 8:30 Wednesday morning at the Motel 6 on Frederick Boulevard when the suspect forced the woman, who had been shot, inside the room.

Numerous law enforcement agencies rushed to the scene after the report of the shooting. During the drawn out attempt to remove the barricaded suspect and rescue the hostage, the suspect allegedly shot at officers who did not return fire. No one was hurt at that time.

Motel guests were evacuated, nearby businesses closed their doors, and roads around the motel were shut-down to traffic following the report of the shooting.

Ellis surrendered to authorities around 7:00 Wednesday evening.
