(KNZA)--Sewer rates will be going up for customers of the city of Hiawatha.
The City Commission Monday evening approved an ordinance increasing rates, effective January 1st.
The minimum charge will increase $5 a month to $27.03 for customers inside the city limits and to $34.37 for customers outside the city limits. In addition, customers inside the city limits will pay a user charge of $29.84 per 1,000 cubic feet of water and those outside the city limits will pay $59.68 per 1,000 cubic feet of water.
City Administrator Mike Nichols says its the first portion of a rate increase to meet funding requirements for phase two improvements to the city’s sanitary sewer system.
The last rate increase was in March 2013.
