Editor's note: The following was submitted by Hiawatha Police Chief John Defore
Now that school has gotten well under way, I would like to remind everyone about some basic “safety rules”. With more children out and about headed to and from school, PLEASE keep an eye out for children walking to and from school.
Also, the police department has received some complaints about vehicles PASSING STOPPED SCHOOL BUSES IS A CRIME, and it is punishable by a fine of $65 plus $75 court cost. Passing a stopped school bus is illegal because, when a bus is stopped with the stop sign out, the bus is letting off children and those children may need to cross the street at the bus stop.
Last but certainly not least, please drive cautiously in school zones even if it is not flashing yellow.
SO AGAIN PLEASE WATCH FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN WALKING TO AND FROM SCHOOL.
We will be out in force monitoring traffic so please remember it is not only dangerous to pass a stopped school bus, but it is illegal.
Sincerely,
John A. Defore
Chief of Police
