(KAIR)--The Kansas Department of Transportation has announced that they will commit nearly $13 million to projects that will improve intersections and road deficiencies in several cities across the state, including locally, Atchison.
Nine cities have been awarded a total of $6.6 million through KDOT's geometric improvement program for fiscal year 2018, with Atchison receiving $1 million. In addition, twenty-two projects will received $6.1 million in KLINK funding for fiscal year 2017.
Atchison City Public Works and Utilities Director Justin Pregont says that officials applied for the funding earlier this year for an improvement project on U.S.73 from U Street to Green Street.
The total estimated cost of the project is nearly $1.7 million.
Pregont says it will be a few years before work begins on the highway, and other funding options have to be pursued to ensure the project is fully funded.
