(KLZA)-- The Pawnee City Council conducted a budget workshop with CPA Julie Bauman of Falls City Monday. Bauman prepares the annual budget for the City of Pawnee City and was at the meeting to receive input from the Council.
Pawnee City has been on a tight budget in recent years with no extra spending included in the budget. City Clerk Tammy Stephens said the City needs to replenish supplies of items such as water meters. She noted that a front end loader to replace the current loader will likely be a top priority.
A budget hearing will be held by the Council September 14th.
Following the budget meeting, the regular Council meeting was held and on first reading an amendment to the sewer rates and charges was approved on first reading. For the past three years the Pawnee City Sewer budget has operated in the red.
If given final approval, effective October 1 the first step in a three-step rate increase will be implemented. Residential, commercial and institutional sewer rates will increase from a $23 per month base to a base fee of $25.76 per month. Industrial rates will have a significant rate change.
Like all other sewer customers the industrial rate is currently a $23 base pay. The new proposed monthly base will be $929.60, an increase of over $900 per month. At present this will only affect one customer in the community.
The commodity charge will remain the same at $5.81 per 1,000 gallons.
Under the proposal, rates will increase again October 1st in 2016 and 2017.
