As of April 17, the IRS had received more than 132 million tax returns nationwide and more than 1.2 million individual tax returns from Kansas.
“More than 94 percent of Kansas taxpayers e-filed this year,” said IRS spokesman Michael Devine. “The number of paper returns is down about nine percent from last year.”
However, the tax filing season isn’t over for an estimated 96,000 Kansas taxpayers who were expected to request a six-month extension of time to file their tax return.
“An extension does not give you more time to pay any tax due,” said Devine, “but getting an extension means the taxpayer can avoid the late-filing penalty, which applies to returns with a balance due filed after the deadline.”
The IRS says anyone who needs to file can use brand-name tax software available on IRS Free File to prepare their tax return and e-file until Oct. 15. Anyone who didn’t file a return or request an extension because they owe taxes should file as soon as possible to stop any penalties.
“There is no penalty for filing a later return if you are due a refund,” said Devine, “and the sooner you file, the sooner you’ll get your money.”
For those expecting a refund, the Where’s My Refund? tool is a fast and easy way to check on your tax refund. Use the IRS2Go mobile app to access the tool, or click on the ‘Refunds’ tab on IRS.gov.
