City Approves Letter of Conditions for Sewer Project Funding
04/09/2015

(KNZA)--The Hiawatha City Commission has approved a letter of conditions  for receiving funding through USDA Rural Development for phase two of the city’s sanitary sewer system improvement project.

The commission gave their approval this week, and authorized the mayor and city clerk to sign the necessary documents.

The city is eligible for a nearly $1.4 million low-interest loan and $927,000 grant through USDA Rural Development.  The city was previously awarded a $500,000 Community Development Block grant through the Kansas Department of Commerce for the $2.8 million project.

The city is under an executive order from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to reduce rain and groundwater from entering the city’s sanitary sewer system.

The Commission was told the phase 2 project will complete the necessary improvements.
