Highway Fatalities On The Rise in Nebraska

(KLZA)-- With 62 deaths reported so far this year, 18 more than the average for 2011-2014, the first quarter of 2015 has proven to be deadly on Nebraska roadways, reports AAA.

In March alone, 28 deaths were reported. A summary released by the Nebraska Department of Roads shows that rural area deaths are up 42 percent for the first quarter of this year and urban area roadway fatalities have risen 41 percent.

Warmer temperatures brought out motorcyclists early during the winter season. So far this year, six motorcyclists have died on Nebraska roadways, compared to a four year average of one per year. AAA reminds all motorists to buckle-up each and every time you enter a vehicle.

Fatality reports show that many vehicle occupants are killed after being ejected or partially ejected from a vehicle. When operating a motor vehicle, always drive defensively looking for motorcycles in the traffic mix, especially when making left turns or changing lanes. All drivers should avoid distractions that take your hands off the steering wheel, your eyes off the roadway, and your mind off of the important task of driving safely.
