(KLZA)-- Falls City Utility and Fire Department personnel will be flushing fire hydrants throughout the city over the next several weeks to flow test and remove any sediment built up in the water mains.
Water customers may experience a temporary brownish-red discoloration with their water during this flushing process. The discolored water does not pose any health threat and is safe to use. If you notice flushing in progress in your neighborhood, you should not use water for a short period of time until the flushing is complete, so as not to pull discolored water into your service piping.
If you do experience discoloration of water, the Water Department reminds you not to wash clothes during this time since the brownish-red minerals will stain white cloth.
The flushing of the system at the fire hydrants removes as much of the build-up as possible. If the system is not flushed, excessive iron and manganese build-up over time could lead to long-term problems such as clogging of lines and water fixtures.
