(KTNC) -- Old prescription medication left in homes can become a problem. Now, Richardson County residents who want to get rid of old or unwanted medication have a place to bring the drugs for disposal.
The Sheriff’s Office has two new boxes where people can take their old medicine. One box was recently installed near the elevator on the first floor of the County Courthouse. Another box will be placed in the Humboldt City Office.
Sheriff Randy Houser says the idea for the drug take-back boxes grew from the response to the drug take-back events the Sheriff’s Office sponsors during Falls City’s spring and fall clean-up days. With the strong public response to those events, Houser says he decided to place the permanents boxes so people could safely dispose of their unused prescription medication without having to wait.
In addition to prescription medication, Houser says people can also leave illegal drugs in the boxes, as well as expired or unwanted over-the-counter medicine.
Houser says they normally take in 20-to-25 pounds of medicine – enough to fill a 30-gallon tub – during the drug take-back events, and this will be a more convenient way for people to get rid of the unwanted medicine.
Anyone can deposit unwanted medication in the boxes during business hours, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
