(KTNC) - There is no charge to enjoy any of three Nemaha NRD parks this weekend.
A vehicle permit is normally required at Kirkman’s Cove near Humboldt, Iron Horse Trail Lake near DuBois, and Wirth Brothers Lake near Tecumseh. The NRD Board sets aside one weekend each year when visitors can try out the parks at no cost. The free weekend is this Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18.
The parks offer various activities, including camping, picnicking, fishing, and boating. Electrical camping hook-ups are available at Iron Horse Trail Lake and Kirkman’s Cove for $12 per night. Camping fees are not waived during the free park permit weekend.
Those who like the parks can purchase a permit for future visits. Annual permits cost $12 and temporary, two-day, passes are $5. The temporary permits are available at each park from the collection boxes near the main entrances. Annual permits can be purchased at the NRD office in Tecumseh from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays, or permits can be requested by calling the NRD at 402-335-3335. They can also be printed from the Nemaha NRD’s website.
Proceeds from the sale of the permits helps pay for maintenance and improvements at the parks. More than $11,500 was raised from the permit sale last year.
NRD officials note that the permits are not the same as Nebraska Game and Parks Commission park entry permits. The NRD permits admit your vehicle to Kirkman’s Cove, Iron Horse Trail Lake, and Wirth Brothers Lake and expire on December 31, regardless when they were purchased.
