Holt County Commissioners Consider Budget Requests

(KTNC) -- Holt County Commissioners are putting the finishing touches on what may be an austere 2014 County Budget.
County Clerk Kathy Kunkel says they’re watching expenditures closely, with the county’s sales tax revenue down approximately six-percent in 2013.
Kunkel says they’re looking at making across-the-board cuts to the General Revenue and Road-and-Bridge Funds. She says the county will have to absorb additional costs as the state courts go to a paperless system.
Judge William Richards told commissioners last month that they’ll need approximately $6,500 to purchase equipment for the new paperless court system. The new equipment includes computer components such as scanners and monitors. Digital recording equipment is also slated to be replaced in the courtroom. Judge Richards estimates that will cost $5,000.
In addition, Kunkel says the county will have additional costs with three elections this year. The county is responsible for paying for the entire cost of the August Primary and the November General Elections. That amounts to about $25,000 per election, according to Kunkel.
Among other budget requests commissioners received last month, Health Department Administrator Brenda Nelson asked for a 50-cent per hour salary increase for the county’s part-time nutritionist. Holt County shares a nutritionist with Davies and Harrison County.
Northwest Enterprise Facilitation has requested the county provide funding in the amount of one-dollar per county resident for the organization’s economic development activities.
Holt County Commissioners have scheduled the budget hearing for 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 21. They will likely approve the budget following the hearing.
