Governor Heineman to Push for Tax Cuts
(KTNC) -- Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman failed to get his proposal to do away with the state income tax through the legislature last year.
The governor isn't real pleased with the alternative proposed by the legislature. Heineman has been disappointed by the report filed by the Tax Modernization Committee, a committee formed to study the state tax system after the legislature backed away from the governor's proposal Heineman says he'll work with several groups to push for tax cuts in the upcoming legislative session. He says that includes a balance of income and property tax relief.
While he’s disappointed the Tax Modernization Committee offered no tax reform package, Heineman still expects individual senators to pick up the issue – especially those running for his job. Of the six Republicans running for governor, three are in the state legislature.
Heineman says he’s eager to hear proposals in the upcoming legislative session on how to lower property taxes, though he admits there's only so much the state can do. He says the key to lowering property taxes is for local governments to control their spending.
