An enthusiastic crowd of more than five hundred converged on the community of Muscotah on Saturday, taking in a vintage baseball game that marked the town’s commemoration of Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Joe Tinker.
Tinker was born in Muscotah on July 27th, 1880, and played shortstop for the Chicago Cubs in the early 1900’s, helping lead them to World Series titles in 1907 and 1908.

The day’s pre-game festivities included remarks from State Representative Randy Garber of Sabetha, and Marci Penner with the Kansas Sampler Foundation.
The two of them thanked community leaders and volunteers for organizing the events surrounding Joe Tinker Day, a distinction that has been given to July 27th thanks to a Kansas House of Representatives proclamation.
Penner also presented the community with authentic bricks from Chicago’s Wrigley Field wall, which will be displayed in the Joe Tinker Museum, housed inside the “World’s Largest Baseball” in Muscotah.
Saturday’s game—played with 1860’s era uniforms and rules—was won by The Hodgeman Nine from Jetmore, who defeated the Cowtown Vintage Baseball Club 11 to 3.
