(KLZA) A new Richardson County jail should have 24 to 27 beds.
That's what a preliminary jail bed projection report and analysis suggests.
The Richardson County Commission received the report Tuesday from the architectual firm Prochaska & Associates, of Omaha.
The commission is considering the possibility of constructing a jail facility at the Armory site on the West edge of Falls City.
Preliminary discussion by the County Board and Sheriff Randy Houser has been to build a facility for 24 beds attached to the front of the current armory.
In other business, the commission entered into an agreement with architect Dennis Lyon to prepare design and construction documents for the restoration of the Richardson County Courthouse with the costs of the proposal not to exceed $5,500. Lyons report, compiled from an inspection in May, included leaks in the corridor of the north entryway to the lower level, leaks in the jail area and the third floor hallway. Pictures indicate a need for a new roof membrane, a need to fix rusting supports and deterioration of the upper roof perimeter.
The Board also approved a grant agreement between the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency and Richardson County for a community safe room at Camp Cornhusker located south of Humboldt. The grant matching funds of $128,827 will be paid by the Boy Scouts of America. The federal grant funds for the project total $386,480.
