Man Pleads Guilty to Charges in Animal Seizure Case
06/03/2013

(KAIR) -- An Atchison County man has pleaded guilty to multiple charges in connection with the seizure of several exotic animals last month.

Matt Baker entered the plea Monday in Atchison County District Court  to one count each of animal cruelty, failure to comply with USDA regulations, failure to comply with cage regulations,  obstruction and possession of drug paraphernalia.

In exchange, a charge of possession of methamphetamine was dismissed.

Baker was arrested in early May after the seizure of nearly a dozen exotic animals were made at a residence in rural Atchison by the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office, The Humane Society of the United States and Big Cat Rescue.

The paraphernalia was discovered on Baker after he became disorderly with officers and was subdued.

The animals were subsequently sent to animal sanctuaries across the nation.

While out on bond, Baker failed a bond mandated drug test and has remained in Atchison County Jail since without bond, however, his bond was reinstated Monday afternoon.

Sentencing was set for July 1st.
