(KTNC) - Southeast Community College has received the maximum continuing accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission. The institution has had its accreditation extended for the next 10-years.
SCC president, Dr. Jack Huck, says the 10-year accreditation validates the quality of the college’s programs, the commitment of their staff, and the support of the Board and communities in southeast Nebraska.
The accreditation process began two years ago, and more than 135 college employees served on various committees that worked towards accreditation. A team of evaluators from the Higher Learning Commission visited the college last October.
Huck says they only cited one area that needed attention, that being student assessment and general education.
Accreditation ensures that programs of study at the college fulfill the HLC’s standards, and it facilitates the transfer of course credits between institutions.
There are also financial implications, as students need to be enrolled at an accredited program recognized by the U.S. Department of Education to be eligible for federal financial aid and veteran’s benefits. Accreditation also makes SCC eligible for federal grant funding.
The next Reaffirmation of Accreditation for SCC is scheduled for 2022-2023. The college will issue a progress report to the Higher Learning Commission in 2017.
