( KAIR )--A man wanted in connection with a Kansas homicide was injured Tuesday after crashing his vehicle south of St. Joseph following a two-state high speed chase.
The pursuit began in Leavenworth shortly before 2:45 in the afternoon when officers attempted to stop a Ford Explorer driven by 27-year-old Brian Shields of Chanute, wanted for the murder of a Chanute woman in February.
Leavenworth Police Chief Pat Kitchens says Shields refused to stop and a chase ensued. The chase made its way through Platte County, Missouri, and then into Buchanan County.
The Missouri Highway Patrol says Shields was traveling north on U.S. 59 at a high rate of speed being pursued by officers when he lost control of his vehicle trying to avoid spike strips in the roadway. The vehicle overturned multiple times and Shields was ejected.
Shields was taken to the K-U Medical Center in Kansas City with what the Patrol described as serious injuries.
A passenger, 25-year-old Angell Autumn of Kansas City, Kansas, was transported to Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph with minor injuries.
Authorities say Shields is one of two suspects charged in the murder of Cristy Wiles of Chanute on February 6th. Wiles body was found inside a home that burned to the ground. The other suspect was previously arrested. Shields is also facing drug and aggravated burglary charges.
