(KTNC) - Minors in Nebraska would not be allowed to use tanning facilities under a bill that had a hearing last week before a legislative committee.
First District Senator Dan Watermeier serves on the Health and Human Services Committee, which heard testimony from proponents and opponents of L-B 132, the Skin Cancer Prevention Act. The bill would ban those less than 18 years of age from using tanning equipment at tanning facilities. Tanning salon operators who violate the ban would be subject to a Class 5 Misdemeanor.
Watermeier says he received at least 50 e-mails a day last week in support of the proposed tanning ban. (play audio :53)
Opponents of the bill say it would be the most restrictive such ban in the nation. Two states now ban those under 18 from tanning, but the penalties for violating the ban are less severe than what’s proposed in L-B 132. (play audio :20)
The committee took no action on the bill. Watermeier says more work would likely be done on the bill before the committee votes on it.
