(KNZA)--An extra penny will be needed to mail that letter starting Sunday.
That's when the United States Postal Service will raise rates for First Class Mail.
If so called “Forever Stamps” are purchased at the current 45-cent rate prior to that date, they will still be able to be used for mailing a one ounce letter; once Sunday arrives, those stamps will increase to 46-cents, with each additional ounce to cost an extra 20-cents.
The one-cent increase will also include postcards which will cost 33-cents to mail.
Changes will also affect the mailing costs of Priority Mail Flat Rate products, with small boxes to cost 5-dollars-80-cents; 12-dollars-35-cents for medium boxes; $16.85 for large boxes and $14.85 for large APO/FPO boxes.
Regular envelopes will cost 5-dollars-60-cents to mail while the price increases to $5.75 for legal envelopes and $5.95 for padded envelopes.
The rate increase comes as the Postal Service continues to struggle financially, with smaller post offices across the nation reducing hours to save money.
