Sheriff & Emergency Manager Discuss Radio & Equipment Sharing with Commission
(KLZA) Richardson County Sheriff Randy Houser and Emergency Management Agency Director Jim Gerweck met with Commissioners Tuesday afternoon to discuss the Sheriff'’ Department radio system and sharing of county equipment.
This meeting was set a week earlier after Sheriff Houser asked the Board to either remove Gerweck from his position as Emergency Management Director or remove him from control of the county radio system and courthouse security management.
Sheriff Houser submitted a bid of $7,400 to have the antenna for the radio system at Humboldt moved to the top of the water tower on the north edge of Humboldt.  Gerweck said he has checked on the system and his radios work fine and he wants to find out why the Sheriff’s Department has problems.  ( play audio :25 seconds )
It was agreed to first try to raise the current antenna to see if it alleviates the long standing problem for the Sheriff’s Department and then move forward with moving the antenna to the water tower if necessary to which Sheriff Houser agreed.  ( play audio :21 seconds )
Sharing of equipment was a bigger issue during the Tuesday discussion.  Sheriff Houser wants access to the county owned emergency trailer without having to go through Emergency Management to get the trailer.  He explained the possible used by the Sheriff’s Department.  ( play audio  :42 seconds )
Gerweck told the Sheriff he felt it would be better if the Sheriff’s Department had it’s own trailer for such uses.  ( play audio :23 seconds )
Deputy Sheriff Lew Barker who was in the audience during the meeting said he could not understand the lack of sharing and cooperation.  ( play audio  :16 seconds )
Sheriff Houser told Gerweck he felt there was no reason his department should not be able to use the current trailer when needed.  ( play audio :32 seconds )
As it stands now, the Sheriff’s Department must make a request to the Emergency Management Department and that department will transport the trailer to the scene.
