(KNZA)--With fall right around the corner, the Brown County community of Horton is ready to clean-up in time for the new season.
That will happen Saturday, October 13th, during the city's annual Fall Clean Up Day, as residents rid their attics, basements, garages, and yards of all types of garbage and waste.
They can do that during free dumping at the Horton Civic Center grounds from 7 that morning until 1:00 that afternoon.
Acceptable items are furniture, carpet, empty paint cans, plastic, mattresses, wood, cabinets, tables, windows, demolished buildings, tubs, toilets, sinks, and shingles.
RSP will furnish large dumpsters and city crews will assist with unloading large items.
Jim Spicer will be available to accept aluminum cans, iron, car batteries, etc.
Tires will also be accepted, but collection will come at a cost: car tires $1; semi-tires $4; tractor tires $15 for the large tires, $7.50 for the small and $2.50 for the front tires.
The Brown County Household Hazardous Waste Trailer will be on site from 8 in the morning until 1:00 in the afternoon, accepting antifreeze, herbicides, pesticides, household cleaners, paint & paint products; spray paint, alkaline and Ni-Cad batteries, mercury, used oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid & gasoline.
Business waste, as well as leaves, grass clippings, or household trash, will NOT be accepted.
Those looking to use the hazardous waste trailer will need to follow certain guidelines:
Empty containers where the product is dried out may be thrown away.
Check containers-make sure lids are tight.
Make sure products are labeled.
Pack wastes in sturdy containers for transportation, such as a tub or box.
Wrap leaking or dirty individual containers in a clean plastic bag and pack each item in a
container with absorbent material, such as “kitty litter” to soak up leaks.
Transport the materials in your automobile trunk, rear of your vehicle or truck bed.
The Fall Cleanup is sponsored by the City of Horton, and questions should be directed to City Hall at 486-2681.
