(KTNC) - Kirkman’s Cove Recreation Area near Humboldt will remain on “Health Alert” status for at least one more week, although toxic algae levels have dropped considerably this week.
Toxic algae levels this week were below levels considered safe, but readings need to be below safe levels for a health alert to be lifted. The health alert status means that restrictions will continue for all activities involving body contact with the water – including swimming, wading, and water skiing.
Kirkman’s Cove Recreation Area is open, and other activities – including boating, picnicking, camping, and hiking – are permitted.
Fishing is allowed, though anglers are encouraged to practice catch and release, as toxins could be present in the fish. Park visitors also should avoid swallowing or making contact with the water, and make sure children and pets do not come into contact with the water.
Restrictions could be lifted if next week’s toxic algae readings remain below safe limits.
