Public Health Warning Issued for Hiawatha Lake
08/31/2012

( KNZA )--A public health warning has been issued for the Hiawatha City Lake due to the presence of high levels of toxic blue-green algae.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment also announced Friday that the Centralia Lake in Nemaha County remains under “ warning” status.

A public health warning indicates that water conditions are unsafe and direct water contact is prohibited.

Also the Brown County State Fishing Lake remains under an “ advisory” status.

Water activities like boating and fishing may be safe.  However, direct contact with the water is strongly discouraged for people, pets and livestock.

KDHE will continue to monitor the lakes and will provide updates as conditions warrant.
