( KNZA )-- A jury trial was averted this week in Doniphan County after a Lancaster man entered a plea in a child abuse case..

25-year-old Brandon Mottin recently pleaded no contest in Doniphan County District Court to a charge of aggravated battery.

Sentencing was set for September 12th.

Mottin was convicted of abusing his girlfriend’s two-year-old daughter.

The child was taken to the Hiawatha Community Hospital on April 4th with severe burns and bruises.

After an initial examination, the child was transferred to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, where she was a patient for two weeks.

Mottin's girlfriend, Cassie Collins of Highland, was convicted earlier this year of aggravated endangerment of a child in the case.  She was given a suspended six-month prison sentence and placed on one year supervised probation.

However, Collins was arrested last month for a probation violation.

She is to make her next appearance in court November 7th.
