(KAIR) -- Two popular summer exhibits in the Atchison County Historical Society Museum have been extended but are coming to their final weekend in Atchison County.
Both exhibits are based around the figures of women, one a life-size Amelia Earhart and the second – Sister Fuga Mundi, as the mannequin wearing the old style habit of the Benedictine Sisters is fondly called.
Museum Director Chris Taylor said both exhibits were originally planned to come down on August 15 – but the reaction to them has been so positive the Historical Society sought to keep them up as long as possible. This weekend, August 25-26, will be the final days on exhibit for both – starting the evening of the 27th both exhibits will start coming down to make way for a new exhibit.
The Sisters exhibit highlights the religious and educational impact the Monastery has had on the community using a number of artifacts on loan from Mount St. Scholastica Monastery and items from the Historical Society collection.
The exhibit is the first event of the 2013 Sesquicentennial of the Sisters in Atchison.
The Amelia artwork was created by Topeka artist Melissa Kingman Rau as one of her first ventures into life-size historical figures.
The Atchison County Historical Society Museum is located in the Santa Fe Depot at 200 S. 10th Street, Atchison and is open 9-5 Mon. – Sat. and noon – 5 p.m. Sundays.
Admission is by donation.
For additional information on current of future exhibits contact Chris Taylor at the museum 913-367-6238 or GoWest@atchisonhistory.org.
