Brown County Courthouse

( KNZA )-- The Brown County Commission has approved for publication a proposed 2013 budget that calls for a slight reduction in the property tax levy.

The proposed 9.2 million dollar budget, approved for publication Monday, contains an estimated tax rate of 36.189 mills, which is expected to generate 4.5 million dollars.

The property tax levy is down nearly two-tenths of a mill over this year.  The mill levy decrease is attributed to an about five million increase in the county’s assessed valuation to 125 million.

Commissioners will consider adoption of the budget following a public hearing on September 4th at 9:30 a.m. in the commission room at Brown County Courthouse.

In other business, the commission approved a memorandum outlining how the county plans to handle the disposition of properties that didn’t sell  at the recent tax foreclosure sale.

Municipalities in the county will be given the first opportunity  to purchase the properties for one dollar each.   They will have until the close of business on October 1st to do so.

Then beginning October 2nd,  the properties not purchased by the municipalities will be offered to the general public for one dollar each with a written request to be made to the county clerk’s office.   Buyer’s will be responsible for 2010 and subsequent years taxes and any assessments made by a municipality against the property.

The county plans to post the properties available on it’s Web site.
