( KNZA )-- A Hiawatha resident expresses disappointment with repair and staffing issues at the city pool this season.
Rosella Madere appeared before the Hiawatha City Commission during a special meeting Monday evening to discuss her concerns.
Madere said the frog slide broke early in the season and was never repaired. Later she said the driving board, which she learned had a crack in it even before the pool opened this year, was removed after it broke.
Madere, whose family had a season pass, said she was disappointed when the pool closed early this year due to staffing issues when most of the lifeguards returned to college.
City Recreation Director Terry Smith noted they hired all the lifeguards that applied this year.
He said a new landing pad was order for the frog slide and arrived in July, but wasn’t installed because it would have forced the closing of the pool for several days during this summer’s 100 plus degree days.
Smith said the diving board was removed after city crews tried unsuccessfully to repair it. He said $4,000 has been included in next year’s budget for the purchase of a new diving board.
Mayor Crosby Gernon suggested that a committee be formed to provide the city with input on the pool.
