Atchison Woman Gets Prison on Drug Charge
08/03/2012

(KAIR) -- A 41-year-old Atchison woman will head to prison on charges stemming from an early May drug raid of her home.

Chantiel Kley was sentenced today ( Friday ) in Atchison County District Court to 30 months in prison on a charge of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.

She was also given six month sentences each on charges of no drug tax stamp and felony interference with a law officer to run concurrent with the other sentence.

She and four others were arrested as a result of an early May raid of her home in the 600 block of Parallel Street by Atchison Police investigators.

During sentencing, Kley’s criminal history revealed her case was  “border box,” which means should could either be eligible for probation or sent to prison.

Kley’s court appointed attorney, Andrew Werring, indicated that Kley already had successfully completed a treatment program after her plea on June 8th and had realized her mistakes and was ready to move on under terms of probation.

County Attorney Gerald Kuckelman recommended a prison term due to Kley’s “inadequate treatment program report plan,” citing that the crime occurred in the family home and that her statement that her relying on her family’s support was not viable because “they couldn’t provide it.”

Werring responded, indicating that the family she listed in the report were reliable and that her “age has nothing to do with not being able to rehabilitate.”

In sentencing her to prison, District Judge Robert Bednar noted that “not even most drug dealers touch methamphetamine.”

Bednar also set post-release probation at 24 months.
