Residents of Nemaha County Nebraska will vote this fall whether to do away with the elected county weed control board.
Commissioners decided to put a question on the November general election ballot asking voters whether the county should keep or abolish the elected weed control board. The decision was made Wednesday after commissioners met with Weed Board Chairman Joe Moody and Board Member Phil Walker.
Nemaha County has hired Joe Wittier as the Weed Control Superintendent, who is accountable to county commissioners. Eighty-two of Nebraska’s 93 counties no longer have elected weed control boards.
In other business, the Nemaha County board accepted a quote from Mainelli Wagner and Associates to inspect 64 bridges in the county at cost of $114 per bridge.
The board approved purchasing two pieces of equipment from Nebraska Machinery Company, at a total cost of just over $12,300.
And the board voted to establish a Road and Bridge Improvement Fund and a County Buildings Fund. Commissioners transferred $100,000 from the Road Fund to the Road and Bridge Improvement Fund, and $150,000 from the General Fund to the County Buildings Fund.
The board also authorized the transfer of $851 to the Veterans Service budget and $1,605 to the County Attorney’s budget due to overspending of budgeted funds for the current fiscal year.
