A few students at Atchison County Community Elementary School recently have been sent home with a virus known as “Fifth Disease.”
School Principal Lisa Brookover says there was just enough of it to send a letter home to parents.

“Fifth Disease” is a virus that includes mild cold symptoms, followed by a bright red rash.
The facial rash is followed by a lacy, flat rash that appears on the arms, legs, trunk and buttocks.
This rash may itch and may last for several days.
It is difficult to avoid exposure to the illness, because it’s most contagious 7 to 14 days before its characteristic rash appears.
Since Fifth Disease is a mild illness, no specific medical treatment is generally necessary.
Brookover recommends that you notify your physician and follow their instructions in the event your child has these symptoms.
Currently, the virus is isolated to the elementary school.
She also says more information can be found at www.cdc.gov
