The Holton, Sabetha and Nemaha Valley golf teams have qualified for the 2012 State High School Tournament after impressive Regional performances on Monday, May 14th. KC Christian, Linn and Valley Heights teams will also compete at state along with several other individual area linksters.
Holton dominated their 4A Regional on home course by sweeping the top six places. Tavin Dugan best teammate Ethan Holaday in a playoff to win the individual title after both carded 71s. Kellen Brandt and Zach Fate each shot 73s while Garrett Holaday fired a 77 and Kenton Tegethoff posted a 78. Holton finished 33 strokes ahead of second place Abilene. Jeff West was third as a team but did qualify Ryan DeBusk (81) and Avery Farrant (82). Hiawatha was seventh as a team just ahead of Atchison but failed to send anyone to state.
At the Sabetha Country Club, the Bluejays dominated their 3A Regional competition while Nemaha Valley edged Maur HIll by two shots for second. The Bluejays won the team title by 21 strokes placing four golfers in the overall top eight. Nolan Keim led Sabetha with an 80 while Kyle Stallbaumer was fourth with an 81 and Matt Manning placed fifth posting an 84. Nemaha Valley's Caleb Meyer shot a 79 for the best round of the day while Zach Bradley shot even 90 for the Raiders. Individual state qualifiers included Brock Hanf (80) who was third overall, Matt Kentzler (86) and Austin Lewman (92) all from Maur Hill as well as three-time state participant McKennzi Knudson of Horton who placed sixth with a round of 85.
KC Christian won the Class 2A Golf Regional at Linn Valley while Valley Heights and Linn teams each qualified for state placing in the top three at the 1A Herrington Tournament. Heights placed a trio in the top 10 led by 90s from Brenden Dobrovolny and Levi Berger while Zak Voelker was third overall with an 99 to pace Linn.
State Golf Tournament are scheduled for Monday, May 21st. Class 4A at Kansas City, 3A at Goodland, 2A at Seneca and 1A in Hutchinson.
