Richardson County attorney Bob Meyer met with County Commissioners Tuesday to review the costs resulting from a bridge collapse last month northwest of Humboldt after an over width and over weight vehicle attempted to cross the bridge.
Commissioners requested the County Attorney’s Office prepare and submit a letter to the driver’s insurance company of the costs incurred so far and the replacement cost of the bridge. It cost the County $16,400 to have the bridge removed. The engineers estimate to replace the bridge, including engineering services is $746,000.
Noah Dively of Hiawatha was driving a tractor, pulling an anhydrous applicator and two full anhydrous tanks across the bridge on 715 Road between 631 Boulevard and 632 Boulevard. Dively was working for Ag Partners of Hiawatha, which has a location in Humboldt at the time of the incident.
In other business, a motion by Commissioner Jim Davidson to increase the salary for the road foreman 44-cents per hour died for a lack of a second. The motion came following a discussion about future purchases of equipment for the Road and Bridge Department.
Commissioners also conducted the quarterly safety meeting. Sheriff Randy Houser noted some issues that have developed with the laundry area for the jail facility. He also noted the radio reception is still problematic in some areas.
Investigator Roland Merwin reported the Sheriff’s Office is short on plug-ins in the office and they are using power strips to operate office equipment. It was requested that an electrician look at the office to determine what improvements are needed.
Emergency Management Director Jim Gerweck suggested it be publicized the lower level of the Richardson County Courthouse could be used as a shelter for severe weather and tornado warnings. Sheriff Houser also commented the lower level is also the designated area for jail inmates to be taken when there is severe weather.
Matt Cromer reported that a representative with the Nebraska Department of Transportation visited the County Shop last week and offered suggestions to the department.
