Residents Seek Land Transfer Due to School Closing
05/09/2012

A group of Bern residents are seeking to transfer their land out of    Prairie Hills USD 113.
Bern residents Mark Haverkamp and Ross Mosteller, speaking on behalf of the group, asked the USD 113 Board this week to consider a request to transfer their property to Nemaha Central  USD 115.
Mosteller said that 157 property owners in Berwick, Clear Creek, Gilman, Nemaha and Washington Townships, along with the city of Bern, desire to transfer their property out of the district.
Mosteller said the group is interested in sending their children to Seneca where many of them work and worship.
The board asked District Attorney Martin Mishler about the process for transferring land from one district to another.
Mishler said it’s a process of negotiation between the districts involved.  Mishler said ultimately it has to be approved by the State Board of Education.  If the districts reach agreement, Mishler said the state board then decides whether or not to approve it.  If the districts disagree, he said then a district could request that the state board hold a hearing or request mediation.
Mosteller says the group will be meeting with the Nemaha Central USD 115 Board Monday evening.
The USD 113 board during a special meeting in March voted to close the Bern School at the end of the current school year.

WOW . . 157 property owners. Think that says a lot for how we feel about being lied to. What do the Sabetha know-it-alls think about that, eh? You really want our children, or just our tax dollars? Youre already going to lose the children with any luck, you wont get our taxes either!

I personally think that the Bern people got a raw deal and I hope that the landowners get the transfers approved. And yes i do live in sabetha.

What do some of us people in Sabetha thin... we think that Bern people have themselves on a shelf way to high! There are alot of immature adults over there that are not setting very good examples for the children when life hands them a lemon! Life is full of changes some are not always changes we like to see. Does it help to throw a tantrum - is this what we want our kids to remember Tantrum throwing parents because they dont like something that was going to happen sometime in the near future. They should just be thankful that USD #113 took them on and gave them another year to be in service. Let us all stop take a time out and clear your minds. It may not be what you wanted but lets make it a positive experince Lemondade from what you guys think is a sour lemon.

Nobody got lied to...People heard what they wanted to hear. Sabetha was in a no win situation. If they didnt accept B/A/S consolidation Like Seneca did they were the bad one...and because they did accept the consolidation which Bern voted on and accepted they are still the bad one. Remember we were going to be shut down if nothing happened on our own. Also remember as we do everything in our power to remove our land from USD#113 they dont have to spend a dime in our community and can take it somewhere else. I think we have a bit of an eye opening ahead of us if 113 approves this. USD 115 owes us nothing.
