The Nebraska wrestling program was honored for its work in the classroom during the 2011-12 academic year on Tuesday, earning the top spot on the NWCA All-Academic Team Top 30 with a 3.46 GPA. The Huskers earned the No.1 ranking for the first time in school history, while posting the third-highest GPA ever by a team on the list. Nebraska also placed five wrestlers on the individual All-Academic squad, which ties American for the most in the country.
The Huskers finished ahead of second-place Harvard, which earned a 3.38 GPA. American, Utah Valley and Big Ten Conference member Indiana finished out the top five. Nebraska and Indiana were two of six Big Ten teams ranked inside the top 30.
The Huskers individual honors included Tucker Lane, Michael Klinginsmith, Josh Ihnen, Skylar Galloway and James Nakashima. Along with leading the country in individual honors, the five individual members also marks the most ever by a Husker squad, surpassing the previous high of four in 2010.
The team GPA is made up of 12 student athletes, 10 of which are the entries for the NCAA tournament conference qualifier from each team. This year's individual team was comprised of 87 total student-athletes, including 23 All-Americans and 77 NCAA qualifiers.
