Missouri Group Attempting to Get Sales Tax Issue on November Ballott
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) _ A group wanting to replace Missouri's
income tax with a higher and broader sales tax says it is committed
to getting the issue on the November ballot.
Anne Marie Moy is a spokeswoman for ``Let Voters Decide,' the
group sponsoring the initiative with the financial backing of
businessman Rex Sinquefield. She says the measure
could help reverse a loss of jobs and wealth in Missouri.
But Jim Moody _ a consultant for the opposition group
``Missourians for Fair Taxation' _ says it would save money for
the wealthy while resulting in higher taxes for lower income
families.
The representatives of the two groups debated the proposal
Thursday at an event sponsored by The Associated Press and Missouri
Press Association.
Governor Jay Nixon says he opposes the initiative.
