Hiawatha Moves Forward With Sewer Upgrades
As required by federal mandate, the City of Hiawatha is underway with initial steps in bringing the city's sewer system into required compliance.
Dave Grimm is the Public Works Director for the city. He says, it's estimated that the total, necessary work, will take around 7-years:
:19 oc projects completed
In recent weeks, crews went to work to identify troubled spots, across the city, with those initial repairs now completed:
:27 oc their basement
Bringing the City of Hiawatha into compliance will be costly, but Grimm says a total can't yet be calculated in the early stages. However, he says financial assistance, including that from the federal level, is the goal:
:16 oc in Hiawatha
The upgrade, to the aging infrastructure is not unique to Hiawatha. Instead, City's across the nation, including Atchison and Horton locally, have also been working to move forward to come into compliance.
Horton has been successful in achieving grant money, including that now allocated by
USDA Rural Development, which is one agency Hiawatha will look to once total cost calculations are completed.
