(KNZA)--A September 7th preliminary hearing has been set for a Hiawatha man facing child abuse charges.
Brown County Attorney Kevin Hill says 25-year-old Frank Lee Rodriguez made his first appearance in a Brown County courtroom Friday morning on one count each of aggravated battery and felony child abuse.
Bond was set at $500,000 cash or surety.
Rodriguez was arrested on the charges Wednesday following an investigation by the Hiawatha Police Department and Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
The investigation was launched after officers were dispatched to the Hiawatha Community Hospital on August 26th for a report of a severe head injury suffered by a minor child. Upon arrival, officers met with hospital staff who informed them the 2-year-old girl was being transported to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.
Police Chief John Defore says as part of the investigation, Hiawatha Police investigators assisted by Brown County Sheriff’s deputies executed two search warrants this past weekend.
Rodriguez remains in the Brown County Jail.
