(KAIR)--Misuse of charitable funds.
That's the allegation made against the manager of the Atchison Emergency Assistance Center for Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas.
Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson tells MSC News 55-year-old Cindy Gillispie was arrested Tuesday, following an investigation launched last week. “The investigation revealed where there was some unauthorized checks that were issued and expended that totaled a little over $8,000, between September of 2015 and late July of this year.”
Gillispie, a resident of Weston, Missouri, was arrested on charges of making false information and theft by deception.
She was booked into the Atchison County Jail, but has since been released on a $10,000 bond.
Wilson says police worked with the Kansas City office of Catholic Charities, which oversees the Atchison operations, as part of the investigation.
Following an inquiry made by MSC News, Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas released the following statement:
Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas (CCNEK) remains fully committed to the Atchison community and will continue to provide social services in Atchison and the surrounding areas. CCNEK is in full cooperation with law enforcement authorities as this case moves forward. Ken Williams, CCNEK President & CEO, invites the prayers of everyone in the Atchison community for the parties involved in this case and encourages patience as the legal process takes its course.
Because this case now has to work its way through the court system, CCNEK refers additional inquiries about the case to the office of Atchison County District Attorney.
