Atchison Intern Fined On Gun Charge

(KAIR)--A 25-year-old Atchison man, accused of attempting to bring a handgun into a federal office building in Washington D.C., has been fined on a charge related to the case.

According to online court documents, Joshua Wheeler, who had been serving as a summer intern for U.S. Representative Lynn Jenkins, appeared in a District of Columbia courtroom Monday, where he plead guilty to a reduced charge of misdemeanor unlawful possession of a firearm.  

Wheeler was fined $100 on the charge, and was ordered to pay an additional $50 to a crime victims fund.

Wheeler was originally charged with felony carrying a pistol without a license. He was placed on temporary leave by Jenkins' office immediately following his June 1st arrest.  

According to his Facebook profile, Wheeler is a native of Ohio who currently resides in Atchison. He began studying political science and finance at Benedictine College last year.
