(KMZA)--The annual Pony Express Reride is underway, with the 35th commemoration of the historic mail delivery service beginning Monday in Saint Joseph.
From there, riders on horseback began to travel the route used 155 years ago, passing their parcels to riders in Elwood, with the route then passing through local communities such as Horton and Seneca. “Most of these guys have been doing it for a lot of years so they have a pretty good idea of where they need to be and that,” Dan Pralle, President of the Kansas Division of the National Pony Express Association told MSC News Monday evening. “We've got five different groups here in Kansas and each group is assigned a Ride Captain [who] takes care of mapping everything out and making sure every rider gets to where he needs to go.”
Pralle, who was on-site Monday evening north of the Sac and Fox Casino, said riders would work their way through the local area, enroute to Marysville Tuesday morning, and then to the Nebraska border.
From Nebraska, the next group riders continue the two week, eight state journey, crossing through Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and Nevada, and ending in Old Sacramento, California.
Around 550 riders are taking part, with each traveling around five miles on horseback, to complete the journey on June 25th.
