List of 2009 Honor Flight Participants and Their Sponsors
(KNZA)--A special reunion is planned in Hiawatha Tuesday.
It was in early August of 2009 that thirteen Brown County veterans of World War II traveled to Washington DC to view the World War II Memorial and numerous other sites through the non-profit Honor Flight Network. “That was August 4th and 5th of 2009,” Hiawatha resident Charles Baird, who helped work to make the trip happen for the local veterans, tells MSC News. “We fundraised and located all of our local World War II vets.”
Of the original thirteen, nine remain living, and they are going to meet for a reunion Tuesday morning in Hiawatha, complete with a special guest speaker, Dr. Kevin Gottlieb. “Dr. Gottlieb runs a grassroots advocacy organization,” Baird says. “He'll talk about the status of the nation and probably the upcoming elections and then he'll probably have a question and answer afterwards if people have questions on what he talks about. I think he just gave this speech to, like, 30-some of the Department of Defense Generals in Washington.”
Baird, who is overseeing the reunion, says it will happen at the Hiawatha American Legion Hall beginning at 10:00.
The Brown County Honor Guard, as well as the Honor Flight Sponsors of the veterans, will also be attending the informal gathering of coffee and chat.
