(KAIR)--The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is reporting that the first case of West Nile virus of the year has been reported in the state.
In a release issued Wednesday, the KDHE states that the individual who tested positive is an adult from Lincoln county.
KDHE officials are warning Kansas residents to take the proper precautions to avoid contact with the virus. These precautions include using insect repellent on skin and clothing when outdoors, and making sure you have good screens on your doors and windows to keep mosquitoes out. Mosquito breeding sites can also be eliminated by emptying standing water from flower pots, buckets, barrels and kids swimming pools, and drilling holes in tire swings to let the water drain out.
In 2014, there were 54 reported cases of West Nile virus in the state of Kansas. Symptoms of the virus range from a low grade fever and slight headache to brain swelling.
