(MSC News)-- Several local entities will be receiving solid waste grants through the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
KDHE says 17 Kansas schools—including Frankfort High School—have been awarded Green Schools Grants totaling more than $50,000.
Frankfort High School will receive a 33-hundred dollar grant, which the school plans to use for field trips and containers.
The grants are funded by a $1 per ton state landfill fee.
KDHE has also awarded more than $400,000 in waste tire recycling grants, including locally to the cities of Atchison, Axtell and Mayetta.
Axtell will receive two grants totaling nearly $18,000, which will be used to purchase rubber mulch for a 71-hundred square-foot playground at the City Park and purchase of four park benches.
Atchison will receive a 18-hundred dollar grant, which will used to purchase three picnic tables and eight benches for the Atchison Library.
And Mayetta will receive a 16-hundred dollar grant, which will be used to purchase two handicapped-accessible picnic tables and eight benches for the Mayetta City Park and Main Street.
The grants are funded through a 25-cent tax paid on the purchase of new tires.
