(KNZA)--A retired Hiawatha teacher is among nine who will be inducted into the Kansas Teachers Hall of Fame this summer.
Ron Nichols, who retired from the Hiawatha school district in 2012 after a 35-year career in elementary physical education, says he’s humbled by the honor. “It's a pretty big honor to be recognized by your peers and be among some of the greatest teachers in the state,” Nichols tells MSC News. “It's pretty humbling.”
Nichols began his teaching career in 1997 with the former Axtell-Bern-Summerfield school district. “High school teachers and coaches impacted me and it [was] just something I thought I wanted to do, to get into helping kids and watching them grow.”
Since its inception in 1997, the Kansas Teachers Hall of Fame, located in Dodge City, has inducted more than 380 educators into its ranks. This year’s induction of the 39th class will take place June 6th.
Each year, nominations are accepted from the 12 districts of Kansas. The state selection committee meets in March to review the nominations and select the inductees. Nominees have to have been teacher for at least 25 years, pass 18 induction criteria, and have made “ a major contribution” to students or their profession.
